Roraima

I just got back from a trip to Venezuela, as mentioned below. The purpose of the trip was anthropological research. We had grant money. It was going to be a great project. But it was a disaster. All kinds of bad luck and one crucial bad decision made it a nightmare. I should blog the whole story. I mean, we got robbed by cops, had government agency problems, and got severely double-crossed by colleagues.
The one good thing that happened was that once it was really clear that the project wasn't going to go through and everything else was a wash, I did a tourist trek in the mountains of southeast Venezuela - in the well known Gran Sabana. This was amazing and totally worth it. A six day trek. - supposedly this is the oldest mountain range in the world. The mountains are flat-toped and called "Tepuis". This was one of the coolest things I've done.

Perspectives in human ecology

Ok, after much deliberation I started a whole new blogspot for use in the class I'll be team teaching this semester. Check it out: http://human-macroecology.blogspot.com/. That way I can put whatever I want on this site and have that one for the formal class stuff. I hope this new site really takes off. We will invite authors of the papers to answer questions and make posts of their own and a variety of people with interest in this area will be invited to participate as well. Of course, it may end up that I'm the only one who does anything with it, but we'll see.
The title of the class is "Perspectives in Human Ecology" but for long term use of the URL (and because humanecology was already taken) I went with human macroecology as a more accurate description of the perspective we are after. I will hopefully make a post soon that thoroughly explains what the heck we mean by "human macroecology".
Hasta luego,
O

Trial Run

I just got back from Venezuela. While I was there I met some folks that convinced me to try blogspot. First, this dude from South Africa, Declann Harris, was in this same group as me for a trek up mount Roraima in the Gran Sabana of Venezuela. An amazing trip. The second person that got me thinking I might try this out I met on the way back home on the plane. For the first time ever I sat next to an attractive and interesting young female instead of some fat dude that wants to fall asleep on me. So, this girl, Ninah Mars, made me feel old and lame and totally not hip for not being with it and having a blogspot and/or a myspace. I need to get an ipod too, or at least a cell phone. Of course, my friend and fellow grad student Yann Klimentidis has also been using blogspot for some time and recommended that I give it a go. We'll see if I keep up with this thing and make postings with any regularity. I give it a 50% chance.
